Uber drivers and Airbnb hosts will no longer be able to dodge taxes on their earnings with the Federal Government moving to a mandatory reporting regime.

A discussion paper will be released on Wednesday by Treasury that canvasses the reporting of earnings but also cutting red tape for those taking part in the sharing economy, The Australian reports.

“More and more Australians are making use of the greater choice provided by platforms like Uber and Airbnb, leading to significant growth in the sharing economy,” Assistant Treasurer Zed Seselja told the paper.

“But as it grows, there is a risk that some individuals are not reporting their full income and avoiding the right amount of tax.”

Major players in the sharing economy include Uber, Airbnb, Airtasker and delivery services such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats but the reforms are targeting the people who participate rather than the platforms themselves.
