Global singing superstars descended on New York for the 40th MTV Video Music Awards where the best in music videos and trending tunes from the past year are recognised.

This year marks 29 first-time nominees, including Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter, Teddy Swims, Benson Boone and Tyla — the latter with three nominations each.

Taylor Swift once again tops this year’s nominations with 10, followed closely behind by Post Malone with nine nominations.

Katy Perry received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for lifetime achievement and her fiancé Orlando Bloom presented it to her.

The celebs dazzled on the red carpet with some making a statement with unusual fashion choices.

Sabrina Carpenter rocked Madonna’s 1991 Bob Mackie dress while Taylor Swift slayed in a Reputation-style plaid and leather outfit.

Katy Perry showed off her toned abdomen and rising pop princess Tate McRae glowed in a see-through black lace mini dress—her boyfriend, Aussie singer The Kid Laroi was also there.

Meanwhile Chappell Roan showed up brandishing a sword and Lil Nas X — known for his offbeat awards outfits — wore a pink and white astronaut suit

The VMAs is known for show-stopping performances with this year’s performers including Eminem, Blackpink’s Lisa, Katy Perry, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, who kissed an alien on stage.

US rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who hosted the night, channelled Britney Spears by recreating the pop star’s iconic snake moment.

In 2001, Spears wore a green torso-baring bustier top and had a python wrapped around her neck while she performed I’m a Slave 4 U.

Another key moment was when Swift honoured the lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks following the anniversary.

“Waking up this morning in New York on September 11th, I’ve just been thinking about what happened 23 years ago. Everyone who lost a loved one and everyone that we lost. That is the most important thing today.”

Held at the UBS Arena in New York, the ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on September 10 but was rescheduled to a day later to avoid conflicts with the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
