The City of Albany will replace its waste collection and processing services this year, ending a 19-year association with Cleanaway.

International company Veolia has been awarded the city’s waste management contract and is set to take over from Cleanaway on July 1.

Albany mayor Greg Stocks said the contract decision was unlikely to affect bin collection schedules for residents.

“Residents’ bin collection schedules are likely to remain unchanged, and the only noticeable difference will be the new company responsible for the collection,” he said.

Cleanaway has held the contract since 2004, and Mr Stocks said the council acknowledged and appreciated the company’s 19 years of service in the Albany community.

“The council decision was made following a competitive tender process which was awarded based on best value and service delivery for ratepayers,” he said.

A Veolia spokesperson said the company was “thrilled” to be named Albany’s new waste management contractor.

“This is a fast-growing region and we are well-placed to support the council in their ambitions to boost household recycling rates,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson also highlighted Veolia’s intention to deliver cost-effective services while keeping things fair for the company’s workers.

“Now that the new waste management contract has been awarded, we will formalise the instrument under which employees will be engaged,” the spokesperson said.

“As Australia’s largest environmental services provider, our drivers are critical to our operations and we value them highly.

“We are known for giving fair wages and conditions and we intend to ensure this approach in Albany.”
