City of Albany slams irresponsible dog owners after taking Andrew Kroeze to court over McKail dog mauling

The City of Albany has condemned irresponsible dog owners after a spate of attacks in recent months, including one incident where a chihuahua was mauled to death. Thirty-five dog attacks have been reported in Albany since July 1 with the city taking one man to court. Andrew John Kroeze appeared in Albany Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with eight offences after his labrador and staffy-cross-labrador escaped on September 2, harassing two children and killing a chihuahua at Pines Estate in McKail. He pleaded guilty to two counts of dog attack causing physical injury, two counts of dog attack causing no physical injury, two counts of failing to exercise proper control over a dog, and two counts of failing to register a dog to the local authority. Kroeze, 45, was fined $5000 and ordered to pay $2558 in compensation to the owner of the chihuahua. Albany mayor Greg Stocks condemned the “preventable” attacks. “If dog owners take proper responsibility for their animals, then we can avoid many of the sad and unfortunate instances like the one in early September,” he said. “Whether it’s ensuring that fences and gates are secure, or keeping dogs on a leash in public spaces, these are simple steps that make a big difference. “Dogs are not simply pets to be welcomed into your life without taking on the full responsibility that comes with them. “They are animals that need proper care, training, and attention, particularly when exposed to public environments.” The maximum penalty for a dog attack is $10,000, and $20,000 if the dog has been declared dangerous. If a person is convicted of two offences under the 1976 Dog Act, they can be ordered not to own or be in possession of any dogs. A city spokesperson said Kroeze decided to destroy both dogs.
