Great Southern Wanderer Program: Katanning learner among 60 new drivers to benefit from McGovern Foundation

A scheme which provides supervised driving and mentoring to Aboriginal and other people from disadvantaged communities is celebrating its success as 60 participants have obtained licences. The free Great Southern Wanderer Program offers resources and support so learners can overcome barriers to completing the required 50 hours of supervised driving. The trainer-mentors, who have contributed more than 2200 hours to the scheme, also help participants like Reece Eades, 24, of Katanning, with access to roadworthy vehicles, identification documents, financial counselling, basic vehicle maintenance and driver training. Since obtaining their licences, 78 per cent of participants have found jobs. Great Southern Development Commission chief executive Natasha Monks said the program helped boost individuals’ self-esteem, eased access to health care and provided greater independence to participants. “Supporting communities to gain access to something as empowering as a driver’s licence opens a lot of doors for the participants and their families, and ultimately helps fill jobs, supports the local economy and enriches our diverse Upper Great Southern shires,” she said. The scheme is led by the McGovern Foundation, which was launched in 2021 by former West Coast Eagles defender Jeremy McGovern and his father Andrew. Andrew McGovern thanked the development commission for its support. “The commission’s backing allows us to reach communities that would otherwise struggle to access essential services, including obtaining a driver’s licence,” he said. “The impact has been profound. Not only are we providing greater employment opportunities but we’re also fostering stronger community connections and enhancing social participation in these areas.” The commission’s support came in the form of a Regional Economic Development grant of $50,250.
