Trainer-jockey combo Steve Wolfe and Shaun McGruddy combine for winning double on Fitzpatrick Plate day

Lethal trainer-jockey combo Steve Wolfe and Shaun McGruddy scored a winning double in Albany on Sunday while hoop Jason Whiting also saluted twice on Fitzpatrick Plate day. McGruddy triumphed with Best Of The Gods in the Celebrating The Life Of Jason Oliver Handicap (1100m) before capturing the Celebrating The Life Of Frank Treen Handicap (1900m) with Catch These Hands at Percy Spencer Racecourse. Best Of Gods ($2.40) powered to a solid one-length victory over Adam Durrant’s Sirius Storm ($5.50). McGruddy then steered Catch These Hands ($5) to a spectacular come-from-behind win, pipping a fading Big Swoop ($19) to triumph by a long neck. Whiting secured the major race of the day with a stirring ride onboard Paul Hunter’s Playing Rio ($6.50) in the Fitzpatrick Plate. Playing Rio swooped late to beat Beau Zoom ($16) and secure the $125,000 feature race by nearly one length. Wolfe’s roughie Cable Boy ($71) rounded out the top three giving plenty of value to the trifecta. Whiting took out the TABtouch Honouring Jockeys Past And Present Handicap (1230m) with a sublime victory on young star Flying South ($2.25), a half-length ahead of Audrey Grace ($13). Alan Smith notched arguably the most enthralling race of the day with hoop Jason Brown winning the Celebrating The Life Of Glen Simpson Handicap (1600m) in a photo finish. Brown led Makin Prophets ($11) to a thrilling long neck victory over Albany trainer Samantha Faithfull’s Sir Bear A Lot ($8.50) with favourite Cheyne Bay ($2.15), Parc It In Here ($4.80) and Lathams Wish ($17) all in a blanket finish. Local trainer Ashleigh Woollett continued her great start to the season with a win in the Celebrating The Life Of Jimmy Lemmon Maiden (1000m). Tash Faithfull booted home Sailoralong ($6.50) to a three quarter-length win over Busy Fingers ($3.20). Bayliss also tasted success with Mistress Of Excess winning the Celebrating The Life Of Ray Oliver Maiden (1230m). Indianna Weinert notched an impressive victory with $7-chance Mr Mt Walker in the Celebrating The Life Of Craig Wake Handicap (1500m). Jockey Lucy Fiore was fined $150 for a whip breach on Cheyne Bay in race four and trainer Darren McAuliffe was fined $50 for use of club colours in races five, seven and eight.
