State Government-managed campgrounds have made the transition to an online booking system at last.

The move by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions will see locations including Boranup, Canebrake Pool and Chapman Pool become available for registered campers ahead of making the trek down south.

While the change was to help provide certainty for travellers, the Times understands it would also do away with the “honesty box” payments method previously open to rorts, with payments taken via the Park Stay WA website.

DBCA visitor services assistant director Rod Annear said users could cancel bookings a day before arrival so campsites could be made available to other campers.

“The changes are about fairness, flexibility and assurance of accommodation on arrival,” he said.

“Given the popularity of the South West as a holiday destination, people who can’t travel spontaneously due to work, family or other commitments need the security of being able to book campsites in advance to guarantee accommodation.”

Impromptu campers were still encouraged to check websites for last-minute bookings.
