Broome’s Cable Beach closed for at least 24 hours after crocodile sighting at Gantheaume Point

Broome locals’ Easter beach plans were cut short by a surprise 2-metre croc sighting at Gantheaume Point on Sunday morning.
The confirmed sighting has prompted an immediate closure of Cable Beach, along with nearby Gantheaume and Reddell Beaches, as a safety precaution.
The Shire of Broome announced the closures would remain in place for at least 24 hours while rangers from the Parks and Wildlife Service patrol the area.
The crocodile—estimated to be around two metres long—was first seen lurking in the waters off Gantheaume Point.
Authorities quickly moved to clear the area, urging the public to steer clear of the shoreline and stay alert.
“Your safety is your responsibility,” a spokesperson from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said.
“Always be CROCWISE in the Kimberley.”
While sightings of saltwater crocs — also known as ‘salties’ — aren’t uncommon in northern WA, their appearance along popular swimming beaches like Cable Beach is enough to stop even the most seasoned locals in their tracks.
Anyone who spots a crocodile or has information that could assist rangers is urged to report it to the Parks and Wildlife Service in Broome on 9195 5500.
