Transwa fares will be cut in half for the next seven weeks as part of the State Government’s summer public transport push.

Beginning on Saturday, the cost of public transport services from the regions, including the South West, will be halved until February 5.

This means return trips from Perth’s East Terminal to the Bunbury Terminal will be cut from $36.80 to $18.40, according to the Transwa website.

For a return trip to Busselton from Bunbury, fares will be $11.20 rather than the standard $22.30.

The move comes after the State Government announced free public transport on Transperth services for Smartrider card holders over the same period of time earlier this year.

Passengers who use the discounted fare to get from the regions to Perth will also be able to access free metro services on the same day by presenting their ticket.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the program would mean more people had access to affordable transport.

“We want to make public transport more accessible and affordable for all, and this initiative is a great way of supporting that,” she said.

“Transwa connects to 240 destinations across regional WA, and this will make getting to those locations more affordable in the summer months.”

The move comes as the South West population are left to use public and private coach services to get to Perth, with the Australind train line out of action while works are carried out on it.

The service closed on November 2023 and is not expected to reopen until mid-2025, with replacement buses running instead.

It will cost the State Government $81 million for two replacement three-carriage trains.
