COVID-19: WA records increase in almost 1000 coronavirus cases in the past week

WA has recorded another increase of COVID-19 cases during the past week following the State’s biggest jump in new infections in almost a month last week.

The Department of Health has reported a total of 5823 new cases in the past week to 4pm Thursday — nearly a 1000 more than were recorded last Friday when 4931 were logged.

On Thursday, there were 3537 active cases in WA.

A total of 140 people with COVID-19 were in hospital and eight of those were in the intensive care unit.

This week’s report included the deaths of 19 people aged from 73 to 99-years-old, dating back to September 13.

This week’s figures push the total number of recorded infections to 1,174,785 cases in WA, since the pandemic’s onset.

There was a total of 8756 PCR tests done in the timeframe and of those a total of 1424 tests returned positive results.

The total number of positive rapid antigen tests in this period were 4399.

WA Chief Health Officer Andrew Robertson is instead encouraging residents to use a RATs if they have COVID-19 symptoms.

“RATs are a safe, convenient and fast option to test for COVID-19,” Dr Robertson said in a statement.
