Two new cases of measles have been confirmed in WA as authorities continue to broadcast an urgent message to vaccinate.

The two cases visited several locations while infectious between April 6 and 11, including Bunbury Regional Hospital on five separate occasions.

Every new exposure site was in the South West region, apart from a two-hour time slot on Wednesday in which an infectious person visited a San Churro cafe at Karrinyup Shopping Centre.

A restaurant, supermarket and a pharmacy were among the other locations.

WA Health advised anyone who visited the locations at the listed dates and times should monitor for symptoms up to 18 days after exposure.

First symptoms include fever, tiredness, cough, a runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a red non-itchy rash three or four days later.

Measles is a highly infectious, airborne virus and can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and inflammation of the brain, also known as encephalitis.

“Infants under 12 months are particularly vulnerable as they are too young to be fully vaccinated. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is normally given at 12 and 18 months of age,” the latest health alert said.

“Two doses of the measles vaccine are highly effective in preventing infection. The vaccine is free in WA for anyone born in or after 1966 who hasn’t already had two doses.”

It brings the number of cases reported since March 19 to 14, after an outbreak saw the virus spread across two prisons. WA has now recorded 15 cases for the year.
