As the countdown begins ahead of tonight’s epic $100 million Powerball, are the odds in a West Aussie’s favour? Taking a look back at last year’s lottery wins may provide some insight as to whether WA truly stands a chance...

According to The Lott, last year was a pretty lucky year for WA, totalling 75 division one wins across the State and producing 51 millionaires in the process.

So what was WA’s most fortunate postcode? The answer: Boulder.

Located 595km east of Perth, the Goldfield suburb came out on top last year, selling four division one entries that came to a colossal total of $56,654,640.10 in prize money.

And the Goldfields wins don’t stop there. In fact, the highest accrued prize money across WA’s regions took place in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder with a whopping $120,004,591 across six wins.

The Goldfields has also taken out the equal top spot for the biggest individual win, splitting a massive Powerball jackpot with NSW and winning $63,309,056.98.

The lucky syndicate ticket was sold at City News Kalgoorlie.

Coming in behind Boulder as WA’s luckiest suburb are Rockingham and Success (ironic?), each with three winners.

And in third place, each with two winners are Kalgoorlie, Mandurah, Alexander Heights and Wanneroo.

In total, 75 division one-winning tickets were purchased by WA players in 2022, the fourth-highest winning State in Australia and resulting in a gargantuan prize pool of $257,000,000.

Victoria came out on top with a total of 155 division one wins, with a near-unfathomable total of $450,175,310.10.

NSW ranked second with 117 and Queensland third with 103.

Although it’s too soon to know the full results for 2023, a total of 43 division one wins in WA have so far been tallied.

And according to The Lott spokesperson James Eddy, WA is on track to reach — and even bypass — last year’s total wins.

“Seeing that WA has already reached 43 division one wins by the end of June, the State is well on track to reaching that number (75), even possibly passing it,” he said.

“We know lottery wins can land anywhere and at any time.”

So will WA stand a chance of pocketing an easy $100m? We’ll find out tonight as the lucky Powerball numbers are set to be announced at 6pm WA time.
