A crafty fundraiser

HAYLEY GODDARDSound Telegraph

A collection of crafty creations from Rockingham Patchwork Group will be exhibited at the Rockingham Arts Centre this weekend.

Exhibition organisers Jan Owens and Sylvie Connell have spent weeks bringing together more than 150 pieces, including 70 quilts, for the display which starts on Friday.

Ms Owens said the collection included hand-made creations such as knitted works, handbags, cross-stitched pieces, dolls, crochets, wall hangings and quilts.

“Some of the items will be for sale, but most are just for display,” she said.

“Others will be auctioned off for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.”

Ms Owens said the not-for-profit group constantly raised money, not for the group, but for the benefit of charities.

“I earmarked Starlight because I have personal links to cancer and wanted to do something for the kids,” she said.

“We want to help provide a better future for sick children.”

Ms Connell said the group’s major fundraiser was an auction, where the first prize was created thanks to a patchwork challenge.

“Each member had to create a 13.5in square to the theme of red and white,” she said.

“Once complete, all squares were combined into a queensized quilt.”

The five-day exhibition is open every day from 10am to 4pm.

Entry costs $2.
