Alleged assaults instigated by teens in Secret Harbour
A woman was allegedly punched in the face by a teenager on Saturday night in one of two assaults believed to be instigated by youths in Secret Harbour at the weekend.
Mandurah police Senior Sergeant Dean Snashall said the woman confronted two teenage boys who had allegedly followed her 15-year-old daughter home.
He said the girl had been at Tuart Park about midnight on Saturday before she became involved in an altercation with two youths, aged 15 and 16, outside her home.
He said the girl's mother awoke to find her daughter embroiled in an argument with the pair before one of the boys, a 15-year-old from Madora Bay, punched her in the face as she attempted to close her front door.
"The mother of the girl asked the two boys to leave and, when they refused, the 15-year-old offender punched her, causing bruising and swelling," Sen. Sgt Snashall said.
"One of the boys also kicked in a window, where the woman's eight-year-old son was sleeping."
In a separate incident, Secret Harbour mother-of-two Suzanne Carroll said her 14-year-old son Alex was attacked by two youths while taking part in a 40-Hour Famine fundraiser at Comet Bay College on Friday night.
Miss Carroll said her son, a Year 9 student, was set upon by two older boys about midnight, suffering minor injuries after he was allegedly hit in the face with a spray paint can and kicked in the ribs.
She said her son suffered a broken tooth and raised concerns over why she and partner Will Maycock were not told about the incident until Saturday morning.
"We are so annoyed about it - we believe the school did offer to phone an ambulance, but Alex refused because he felt embarrassed," Miss Carroll said.
"Assaults on young people are happening far too often in Secret Harbour - we are fuming because I received only one call at the time, and woke up to a voicemail the next morning."
Comet Bay College principal Jamie Hayres said the school had attempted to contact Alex's parents and left messages when there was no answer.
"The student was monitored closely and, while he had minor bruising, he was happy to continue with the fundraiser," Mr Hayres said. "I am very concerned this incident occurred and I am working closely with police."
Police charged a 15-year-old boy with assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage in relation to the Saturday night incident, and are looking for his 16-year-old alleged accomplice. They are reviewing CCTV footage.
