Her inspiration to paint developed while observing the different styles and talents of her family, and now Fiona Reidy is the official recipient of the Bindjareb Art Award.

Reidy was presented with her award at the NAIDOC Week flag-raising ceremony earlier this month at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

The 2016 Bindjareb Art Award is a partnership between the City of Mandurah and the Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

This is the fourth year of the award, which contributes to an emerging Nyungar Art Collection for the community by the City of Mandurah.

This collection defines experiences and provides inspiration for people to share, nurture, educate and enjoy arts and culture.

Reidy said she was overwhelmed by the announcement she had won the award and she wanted to thank all those who were involved in her creative process.

Reidy is a Noongar woman of the Bal-ar-dong clan, traditionally located in the York and Brookton areas in the Wheatbelt region of WA.

Reidy said she had depicted one of the six Noongar seasons in her painting — Makuru (June/July), which is the coldest and wettest time of the year.
