Artists new line of thought

Budding Rockingham artists will have the opportunity to learn a different way of capturing the moment in a three-day workshop with a Waikiki painter and ceramicist.

The workshop series, titled Learning How to Draw with an Artist's Eye, by Anna De Jager aims to teach creative people a "freer" form of working by looking for the lines of a subject matter.

Mrs De Jager said the process relied heavily on what artists were seeing, more than what they wanted to draw or paint.

"People need to develop their works into individual creations," she said. "Even though everyone is drawing the same object, the outcome is different, depending on the individual."

She hoped to achieve this through her free-flowing technique on transferring lines and shapes to the canvas, which she has seen work well in other lessons.

"I create interesting, lop-sided landscapes because I don't believe we can improve on nature," Mrs De Jager. "If you paint what you see, it's boring and there is no excitement - instead I want wow."

The workshop series will be held at the Gary Holland Community Centre.
