Comet Bay College celebrated winning the middle school division of the 2012 Act-Belong-Commit School Banner Competition last week.

The school won the award for its banner and efforts to highlight this year’s competition theme, Get Active.

‘‘What made it so special is that these students aren’t renowned in particular for their artists skills—most of them haven’t studied art since Year 10,’’ college spokeswoman Claire Hunt said.

‘‘But they decided to attempt the project as a group just for fun and all chipped in to the design and production process.’’

Ms Hunt said up to 12 students met once a week for one hour to create the banner. ‘‘To ensure that the banner was finished in time, they spent their personal time on a weekend to come and paint the banner for five hours straight,’’ she said.

The City of Rockingham competition is in its 14th year.

A total of 32 entries were received from 16 schools around the area and were judged on their reflection of the theme, evidence of student participation and overall visual appearance.

The Lower Primary award and Rockingham Regional Arts Excellence Award went to Living Waters Lutheran College and the Upper Primary award went to Koorana Primary School.

Competition winners have their decorative banners displayed on Read Street.
