Battle for Kwinana is on

BRIAN OLIVERSound Telegraph

Two popular leaders — both vying for the same political glory.

One is the sitting Kwinana MP, the other is the city’s mayor.

He has unfinished business after being elected to Parliament for the State seat of Kwinana four-and-a-half years ago.

She is hoping to go one better at Saturday’s poll after a failed tilt in 2008.

While this Saturday’s election will have fascinating contests in electorates around the State, there will be none more so than the battle between Labor’s Roger Cook and independent Carol Adams.

In the final week of campaigning, Mr Cook, who lives in Wellard with his wife and two children, said his work for the electorate had just begun.

“We’ve worked hard in the first four years, with good outcomes for the community and built support for work we’re doing,” he said.

“However, there is still a lot more to be done,” he said.

Ms Adams said she had a proven track record of getting things done and, if elected, would bring a wealth of life experiences to the political table.

“My particular strength is I know I can work collaboratively with the elected party which will pay dividend to the electorate,” she said. “I see an independent as a win-win for the electorate in this current political climate.”

The preferences of Greens’ candidate Iwan Boskamp is set to be pivotal to the outcome of the seat, which was decided by 300 votes at the last election.

Last month the Telegraph revealed Mr Boskamp planned to preference Mr Cook after the Greens preferenced Ms Adams in 2008.

Mr Boskamp said the electorate deserved a politician who was opposed to incinerating waste, committed to shifting freight from road to rail and ending live animal exports.
