Bay gets makeover for public
Rockingham’s yacht and boat lovers will be able to enjoy a day out at Garden Island again after a complete refurbishment of Buchanan’s Bay.
The recreational site on the eastern side of the island reopened last week, complete with new barbecue and picnic area, said Garden Island senior ranger Steve Booth.
“Some 16 months ago, the site was in poor state and I was concerned with public safety, but with work undertaken recently, I am sure the public will be impressed,” he said.
“The lawn area within the barbecue enclosure has been completely re-established and the reticulation system has been improved.
“The Department of Parks and Wildlife has funded the upgrade.
“Naval personnel have been responsible for the construction of the barbecue and other facility improvements.”
Mr Booth said public access to the site was only available to those arriving by recreational boat and yacht.
He said access was also available to Garden Island’s two other public access areas at Herring Bay and Pigs Trough Bay.
Mr Booth reminded visitors that they must stick to rules when using the island’s facilities.
“Visitors are reminded that access is from sunrise to sunset and overnight camping is prohibited,” he said.
“Lighting of fires is banned and animals, including pet dogs, are not allowed.
“And please do not bring sand boards, jet skis and spear fishing implements. Remember to stay on track when exploring. Garden Island is home to the venomous tiger snake, among 14 other reptile species.”
