Birds of many feathers
A Kwinana park is now the home of a new artwork that aims to highlight Australian culture and build positive relationships throughout the community.
South African-born artist Vanessa Liebenberg recently completed the public mural at Skottowe Park.
The double-sided mural features an array of vibrant international birds and wildlife, highlighting the different journeys people make to call Kwinana home.
A local of eight years, Liebenberg said the mural extended on to the ground by the branch of a eucalyptus tree, forming circles in a pattern representing the children’s game of hopscotch.
“Yellow dots are done in luminous paint, which will glow in the dark and will be visible at night,” Liebenberg said.
“The dots indicate the flight path of the migrating birds and explores the concept of space and place.
“It was lovely to meet the people living in the area who often visit the park — they were all very friendly and interested in my work and I got to know them through the course of the project.”
The mural also has specific features on each side that represent day/summer and night/winter.
City of Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said Liebenberg’s mural was important for helping Kwinana locals embrace their cultural journeys.
The project was funded by the City of Kwinana and was painted single-handedly by the passionate artist, which took her 250 hours.
