Books spice up mum’s life
Perennial favourite Amanda Muggleton returns to the Mandurah stage to perform in The Book Club — the story of genteel housewife and mother, Deborah, and her passion for books.
The Book Club is part of the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre’s Immerse 2013 season.
Based on the play by Roger Hall, it is a clever and witty exploration of what can happen when children leave the nest and husbands are absent dealing with their own mid-life crises.
Deborah deals with all of this by losing herself in books, daydreaming about romantic lunches with the likes of Martin Amis or passionate hotel trysts with John Updike.
The spice of Deborah’s real life is her book club.
For her, club meetings provide an opportunity to glean gossip from her friends about their very different lives and relationships.
But when a writer joins the group for a study session, Deborah’s fantasies become a reality.
Following on from her acclaimed performances as Shirley Valentine, Muggleton is fast becoming recognised as the one-woman-show professional of Australian theatre.
The Book Club will show from 7.30pm on Saturday.
Tickets are available by calling the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre box office on 9550 3900.
