Brighter outlook for centre
Naragebup Rockingham Regional Environment Centre’s fundraising venture, the Lakeside Outdoor Cinema, has contributed to its coffers and there are nowhopes the organisation will reopen during the week.
Centre coordinator Ann Temmen said the inaugural outdoor cinema seasonwas introduced after the organisation fell on financial hardship.
‘‘We were assisted by the City of Rockingham with a funding grant to purchase equipment,’’ Ms Temmen said.
‘‘The season will be repeated for sure—itwill be an ongoing source of income of us.’’
The 10-movie season showed a range of films, including documentaries, in the centre’s amphitheatre from November to March.
Ms Temmen said up to 85 people attended the recent showing of Hook.
‘‘The concept was really well received and some movies were more popular than others,’’ she said.
‘‘Family films and dress-up nights were the most popular.
‘‘We used this as a learning experience and we will look at what movies we show next season.
‘‘We’d love people to come along next season and support us.’’
Last year the centre received news of its impending closure because it was behind in loan repayments to Rockingham City Council.
Ms Temmen said the centre shut its doors during theweek to save costs.
She said the LakesideOutdoor Cinema was one venture being employed to raise funds.
‘‘At this stagewe are only open on weekends, but we hope to open again midweek soon,’’ she said.
‘‘The outdoor cinema is one of the things helping us get there.’’
Saturday night was the final movie showing for the 2011/12 season.
The Lakeside Outdoor Cinema will reopen in November.
