Brumbies colts are broken

DEAN STACEYSound Telegraph

The Mandurah Mustangs produced one of their best performances of the season to upset minor premiers Baldivis in Sunday’s Peel Football League colts grand final.

In ideal conditions at Rushton Park, the Mustangs kicked away after quarter-time en route to a 35-point win, 11.7 (73) to 5.8 (38).

Baldivis started the match as heavy favourites after finishing the season with a 16-2 win-loss record.

However, fourth-placed Mandurah were riding a wave of confidence stemming from finals wins over Halls Head, Rockingham and Waroona in recent weeks.

Goals were at a premium in the first term, with both sides managing one apiece. Mandurah broke the deadlock in the second term with five majors to one.

They went on with the job after halftime, outscoring Baldivis by eight and four points in the third and fourth quarters.

Meanwhile, Waroona were crowned PFL reserves premiers after downing Centrals by 29 points. Five goals from Adam Clancy proved the difference between the sides, while Demons teammate Stephen Srohj was similarly damaging with three. Craig McGarry and Rory Murphy were Centrals’ main avenue to goal with three apiece.

Jason Hysen, Andrew Hathaway and Clancy were Waroona’s best, while McGarry, Colin Greenham and Aaron Jeffery stood tall in a losing cause for the Blues.

The Demons set the tone early with five unanswered goals in the first term.

Centrals, who were restricted to a solitary behind until the second quarter, finally found the big sticks but still trailed by 41 points at half-time.

Waroona’s cause was helped by some accurate kicking, which saw them post 11.2 at the final change.

To their credit, Centrals battled on and outscored their opponents in the fourth term, but the damage had been done as Waroona ran out comfortable winners, 12.4 (76) to 7.5 (47).
