Brumbies lament loss

The Baldivis Brumbies received a 54-point thumping by reigning premiers the Pinjarra Tigers at the weekend, with the boys suffering their first loss for the season.

The Tigers proved too strong for the Brumbies in round 2 of the Alcoa Peel Football League on Saturday winning 13.19 (97) to 6.7 (43).

The Brumbies started the better team with Jakeb Bilsborough, Sam Palm and Dustin Burns getting plenty of possessions to register the first goal of the game after 10 minutes, through a Brendon Copeland mark and goal.

The Tigers hit back after being dominated for the first half of the quarter to take a five-point lead into quarter time, thanks to the brilliance of former Peel Thunder defender Matt Battye.

From the start of the second term, the Brumbies were shown why the Tigers were premiers last year as the team dominated all over the ground, with their physicality towards the ball evident in their six goal to one quarter, with the Brumbies’ only goal coming from Alex Stuart.

The highlight of the game for the Brumbies was holding the Tigers goalless in the third while kicking two themselves, but in the end the Tigers proved too strong as they ran out nine-goal victors.

Best players on the day for the Brumbies were Bilsborough, Burns and Chase Strange who garnered many possessions between them, while Llane Spaanderman worked tirelessly in the ruck for most of the game.

Copeland chipped in with two goals to lead the Brumbies’ scorers.

The Tigers were well served by Battye who earned best on ground honours, while Darcy Kingsbury and Leigh Martin worked well in defence.

Next Saturday the Brumbies and Rockingham Rams will meet at Anniversary Park for the northern derby.

The Brumbies will need to tighten up on their defence if they want to knock off the perennial finalists.
