Brumbies, Rams on the rise in PFL

The 2016 Peel Football League is shaping up to be a good year for the two local teams.

The Baldivis Brumbies have firmly cemented their place at the top of the ladder, notching another win to their belt to make it five straight while the Rockingham Rams scored another confidence-boosting nine-point win over South Mandurah at the weekend.

After an 11-point victory over Halls Head on Anzac Day, the Brumbies scored their biggest win of the year so far on Sunday when they smashed the Mandurah Mustangs by 75 points.

League coach Michael McCann said the game was close in the early stages until the Brumbies found their feet and began to make an impact on the scoreboard.

“It was a slow start, but eventually the play became clean and we used the ball better and came away with a good win,” he said.

“We have now had five wins, which is a good sign that we are confident and ready to play finals.

“We are a really strong club with a large number of players up for selection, and with a few missing with injuries and work, there is a good chance our best footy is yet to come.”

McMann was impressed with Aden Field, who has been consistent in the midfield, and Rob Young, who is the current leading goalkicker in the PFL.

It seemed the Rockingham Rams enjoyed the taste of victory after their first win of the season last week and continued to improve.

Rams coach Tony Morley said although he had his doubts leading into Sunday’s clash with last year’s premiership team, his team played well and worked hard for the win.

“Beating South Mandurah has been great for morale and it was a really good team effort,” he said.

“There were no weak players and everybody worked really hard, which is what we want to see.

“We have another big game ahead but I am confident the players will preform well.”

In round 6, the Rams will take on Waroona at Anniversary Park on Saturday, while the Brumbies play the Centrals in Mundijong on Sunday.
