Burglary of medical records risks young life
A former resident's Christmas visit to Rockingham turned sour after thieves broke into the family's car and stole several items including her daughter's important medical records.
The burglary was an end to a stressful month for Chantelle James during which her father died and a bushfire threatened the family home.
In the December 18 burglary, a 60L car fridge, tools, air compressor and nappy bag - which contained invaluable medical records of her daughter's heart condition - were stolen.
Kathleen Evans, 20 months, was born with thickened muscles of the heart and requires refrigerated medication daily to keep her heart rate down.
Ms James, who now lives in Wodonga, Victoria, said the toddler had been struggling to breathe for the past week but could not seek help in Perth without the paperwork and was forced to stop Kathleen from playing until they returned home to see her cardiologist for treatment.
Kathleen's father Nick Evans said he was disappointed to lose the items from his vehicle but was angry that the records were taken.
"The items can be replaced but while travelling we need that information," he said.
"If she has a turn and needs emergency treatment, the information in that book can mean the difference between her surviving or not.
"Even a five-minute delay in getting that information can be extremely life-threatening."
Ms James admitted she had suffered many sleepless nights worried for her daughter's health and hoped to be able to replace the car fridge soon so they could get on the road and home to the doctor.
She said it could take more than a month to get the records reprinted.
Ms James urged anyone who found the records to call her on 0416 231 138 .
