Bushfire warning for Rockingham

Lives and homes could be in danger from an out-of-control bushfire in Rockingham.

A watch and act alert has been issued for people in the western part of Rockingham bound by Fisher Street, Seawind Drive, The Esplanade and May Street.

"There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching the area and conditions are changing," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.

"You need to leave or get ready to actively defend."

The fire started near Fisher Street.

Residents have been warned that burning embers are likely to be blown around homes.

People who live in the area but are not home are urged to stay away because conditions could be dangerous.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued the following advice.

SAFER PLACE

• Your safest option may be to visit family or friends who live away from the area.

ROAD CLOSURES

Avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site

A number of roads have been closed including:

• Fisher Street between Parkin Street and Barossa Approach

WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING

• Approximately 40 Career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, and Bush Fire Service firefighters are on the scene.

• Firefighters are actively fighting the fire and protecting houses.

• Firefighters are currently working to get the fire under control.

• Aerial support is assisting ground crews

EXTRA INFORMATION

• The fire was reported at 1.54 pm on Wednesday 17 December

• The cause of the fire is unknown.

• People are asked to report any suspicious behaviour to Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

• DFES is managing the fire.
