Cake queen Cust bakes up a storm with sweet passion

The kitchen bench of Bertram mum Sam Cust will be covered with flour, eggs, butter, icing sugar and measuring cups today as she celebrates National Cake Decorating Day with a friendly bake-off.

Any day is a good excuse to eat cake, according to Mrs Cust, who discovered a love for baking about two years ago and is now on her way to starting up her own cake business.

“I have never been interested before, like at all, and then suddenly I saw there were a couple of cake courses that the Rockingham Cake Gallery ran,” she said.

“I got completely hooked — then I started making cakes for family and friends.

“I have found it has become a new passion for me, I’m really, really enjoying it.”

Mrs Cust said her specialty was mud cake but the challenge of creating a cake was what kept her interested.

“Because a lot of people are watching the TV now with shows on like Cake Boss, nobody really just wants a cake anymore, it needs to be a car or it needs to be a dog,” she said.
