Since Cancer Council WA launched its dedicated transport service for Mandurah and Rockingham patients in March, the service has become so popular that a vehicle upgrade was needed.

On June 8 the regional support team received a Hyundai iLoad, which now provides seats for up to seven people each trip.

Rockingham Cancer support co-ordinator Melanie Taylor said the upgrade was the result of more requests for transport from radiotherapy patients in Peel.

“Our transport service is helping to relieve some of the pressure and stress on cancer patients and their families during what can be a very difficult time,” she said.

“Patients don’t have to worry about traffic and the cost of parking and carers can take a well earned break for a few hours.”

The transport service begins in Mandurah and drives patients to Fiona Stanley Hospital on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Cancer Council WA purchased its patient transport vehicles with money raised from the Dry July fundraiser.

Ms Taylor said dedicated volunteer drivers ensured patients arrived at their appointments safely and on time.

Regional Cancer Support Centres seek to reduce the impact of cancer by providing assistance and support to anyone who is affected by a cancer diagnosis.

Peel and Rockingham residents will be able to access the Cancer Council’s new Pathway Program when it starts in August.

The Pathway Program gives cancer patients a chance to attend confidential support meetings and learn about effective ways to live with their diagnosis.

The program will feature guest speakers from a range of health and wellness background who will cover a variety of topics including nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, family, work and complementary therapy.

Sessions will take place once a fortnight on Wednesdays commencing in August.

To register, call the Rockingham centre on 9591 3118.
