Cancer research trek

NARELLE BUTCHERSound Telegraph

Three Baldivis women will bear blisters and cramps to walk 60km in a bid to raise money for cancer research.

Sharon Robertson, Lisa Newell and Karen DeFoy have signed up as the Baldivis Babes for the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers fundraiser — a two-day trek throughout Perth on March 15 and 16.

Mrs Robertson rallied her friends to join the walk after reading statistics about her own cancer risks.

“When I turned 40 I realised I was in the next risk category for breast cancer,” she said.

“The realisation was that I would end up knowing about 20 people with one of these cancers in my life — so that’s when I decided I wanted to do it.”

All three women said they had family members and friends who had battled cancer.

Mrs Robertson said the walk would be emotional.

“There are a lot of people on the walk who are going through cancer now,” she said.

“It’s going to be an eye-opener but that’s what will keep us motivated.

“I will be thinking ‘if they can do it and we’re reasonably healthy people, we should be able to do it’.”

Each walker needs to raise at least $2000 to participate.

A quiz night at The Chase in Baldivis last week added more than $4000 to their tally.

The Baldivis Babes will hold a sausage sizzle at Bunnings Port Kennedy on Monday, March 3.

Funds raised by the Weekend benefit the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
