A 31-year-old Shoalwater man was charged with assault and criminal damage on Saturday night after an altercation with a taxi driver outside Grange Pharmacy in Cooloongup.

A police spokeswoman said the man assaulted the 47-year-old driver from Canning Vale at about 9.30pm.

She said the man fled on foot after the altercation, but police caught up with him a short time later.

The man was taken to Rockingham Police Station and charged with assaulting a driver of a passenger vehicle and criminal damage. The taxi driver received non-life threatening injuries.

The man was bailed to appear at Rockingham Magistrate's Court later this month.

The incident comes just three weeks after Grant Collard, 48, was handed a life sentence for the murder of Mandurah taxi driver Lindsay Ferguson.

Mr Ferguson suffered a heart attack after a terrifying encounter with drug-affected Collard in 2013.
