City goes green

ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

Keeping the City of Kwinana as green as can be was on council’s agenda last week as the City’s Junior Council submitted a natural environment report for a “green week” for surrounding schools.

The report said Junior Council had found there was not enough awareness about the issues of litter within school communities.

“Due to this lack of awareness, the negative impact of litter on the environment, particularly around the local schools, is growing,” the report read.

As a result, the Junior Council recommended measures be undertaken to ensure students in Kwinana were educated about the effects of litter on the community through the introduction of a “green week” school initiative.

Junior Council mayor Tristan Pampling, 14, said everyone would benefit from a cleaner environment.

“The community is a lot better without the litter and the nature here is beautiful and I just want the next generation to be able to experience it as well,” he said.

Tristan, who attended a council meeting with fellow junior councillors on Tuesday, August 28, for the first time said the process was “different” to what he expected.

“It wasn’t how I thought it was going to be, it was more relaxed but it still got the job done with efficiency,” he said.

Kwinana councillors unanimously approved the agenda’s officer recommendation to encourage awareness within the community about litter.
