City topple Kingsway

BRIAN KENNEDYSound Telegraph

Rockingham City welcomed Kingsway Olympic to Lark Hill on Saturday and had a comfortable 2-0 home win.

Rockingham took control of the game early with Martin Barnes and Ryan Kennedy controlling play from the centre of the park, but despite dominating possession, chances were few and far between.

Late in the first half, Rockingham cranked up the pressure and got the opening goal after converting a penalty which was awarded for handball by the Kingsway defender.

Within a minute, they tucked away the second goal of the game from close range as Rockingham tightened their grip on the contest.

It was more of the same in the second half as the home side controlled the game from the outset.

The Rockingham reserves were away to Kingsway reserves on Saturday and started out strong before losing 2-1.

Rockingham had chances to win the game and the defence looked solid, but they needed to be more clinical and put away some of their opportunities.

The Rockingham State 18s looked to build on a five-game unbeaten run against Kingsway Olympic, and got off to the best possible start before Kingsway equalised.

Five minutes into the game, Josh Mackinder made a run down the right, driving into the box to pull the ball back to Callum Birney who finished expertly.

But Kingsway equalised 15 minutes before the end of the game.

Brendan McCamley had an opportunity to win the game for Rockingham five minutes before time, however, looked to pull the ball back instead of having a strike at goal.
