Henderson based company Civmec Construction and Engineering has been named alongside Black &Veatch as preferred proponent in a joint venture which would see the pair upgrade the Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The plant, which is the largest in WA, will undergo an expansion worth $196 million to boost capacity by 40 million litres a day to 180 million.

Under the works upgrades include a new grit removal facility, new flow distribution channel, new sedimentation tanks, conversion of the existing batch reactor to a permanent aeration facility and the expansion of existing odour collection and treatment systems.

Civmec chief executive Patrick Tallon said the project was especially significant given the close proximity of the work site to their Henderson facilities.

“We see water and wastewater infrastructure as a long-term business opportunity and are committed to working together with our partner to deliver the best project outcome for the Water Corporation and the local community,” Mr Tallon said.

Water Minister Mia Davies said the program would be delivered using a construction alliance model which the Water Corporation has used to complete other projects including its two desalination plants.

“The Woodman Point Plant is a critical part of Perth’s wastewater treatment network and it currently serves about 680,000 people,” Ms Davies said.

“Once this large program of work is completed it will be able to accommodate 900,000 people by 2019.”

Work will commence in early 2017 with about 200 people set to be employed on the project.

It is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
