Club hits milestone

ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

Rockingham Rams Football Club players will switch their footy boots for dress shoes on Saturday to celebrate the club’s 60th anniversary.

Past and present members will gather at the Anniversary Park clubrooms to celebrate.

Club president Steven Boyd said it all started back in 1951 with a committee and a team of 22, but it wasn’t until 1954 that the club joined the Sunday NFL.

“There have been an extreme amount of changes from 60 years ago whereby we have grown as a club in many facets,” he said.

Starting out with about 30 members, Mr Boyd said the seniors alone had about 110 social, playing and club members now.

“Having a good group of juniors over a long period of time has helped us blood some great talent from within the club,” he said.

“Many current players played their junior footy with the Rams.”

Mr Boyd said club members had dug through the archives and come up with some interesting history, which would be displayed on Saturday night.

“We encourage people to come along and learn about the history of the Rams,” he said.

Club league coach Craig Otto, who started out as a 17-year-old colt at the club in 1986, said he had a lot to celebrate, including leading three colts sides to win flags and playing in club premierships.

“From day one it has felt like I was part of a great organisation,” he said.

“It has just been a great journey over the years and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

He predicted a bright future for the club.

Mr Boyd said the club was oozing potential and believed it would push through the tough times and blossom into something special. The event begins at 7pm. Tickets are $15.
