The Rockingham sporting community is kicking goals, with construction of two new facilities starting this week.

The Singleton Sports and Community Centre at Laurie Stanford Reserve and the Golden Bay Sports Pavilion at Rhonda Scarrott Reserve will house a number of different sports and provide improved resources.

Both facilities have been commissioned by the City of Rockingham, with the joint project costing $6.4 million. The State Government has also provided funds .

The Singleton centre will comprise new community meeting rooms, changing rooms, a first-aid and umpires room and a new social space and kitchen.

The facility will replace the existing Comet Bay Bowling Club, Singleton Hall and Singleton Community Centre.

It will be home to Singleton sports teams taking part in cricket, tennis, soccer and bowling, with the social club also meeting there.

The Golden Bay facility will be the new home of the Secret Harbour Dockers Football and Cricket Club.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels confirmed that the venues were expected to be completed within the next 12 months and that additional funding will cover the cost of upgrading existing infrastructure such as carparks, reticulation and floodlighting.

Secret Harbour Dockers Football Club junior vice-president Darren Witte said the new facilities were a hot topic of conversation.

“We are one of the biggest junior football clubs in the Peel district and we have been operating without a clubhouse for10 years,” he said.

“This will give us a home base and allows us to host our own functions instead of hire other venues, which has been less than ideal.”

Mr Witte said the news of new facilities had also attracted more youngsters to the sport and showed that the club was going places.
