Connor has his sights on a berth in the State side

Talented young lawn bowler Connor Biddle has his sights on a place in the WA State team this year.

The 16-year-old, who plays at the Warnbro Bowling Club, revealed he had the sport in his blood.

“I had four grandparents who played and they decided to take me down one night about five years ago,” Connor said.

“I picked it up and I really enjoy it … every now and then I can get a couple of mates to come down and play as well.

“I’ve played almost every sport, but lawn bowls, out of all of them, is probably the most relaxing sport.

“It can still get competitive though, don’t get me wrong.”

Connor, who is also a keen cricketer, won the Club Championship Triples with fellow Warnbro bowlers John Smith and Max Grantham.

He can also lay claim to being one of the youngest lawn bowlers in the country to win a coveted eight-pin.

Along with a potential place in the State squad this year, Connor has his eyes on representing his country.

“If I continue along the lawn bowls path, the main goal I would like to reach would be playing for Australia.

Head coach David Gilroy said the club had a proud tradition of players representing WA.

“We’ve been running 11 years, we’ve had 12 in the State squad and seven made the State side, so we’ve got a good track record,” he said.

“I work on the adage lawn bowls is a young people’s sport that old people can play, not the other way around.

“There are more and more youngsters getting into the game because a lot don’t want to play contact sports.

“Television also did a lot for its promotion.”
