Courts get a facelift

SOPHIE HAWKINSSound Telegraph

The courts at Rockingham Tennis Club have been given their first facelift in more than 25 years and the club is having an open day on January 20 to celebrate.

Grants from the Department of Sport and Recreation and the City of Rockingham, as well as fundraising by club members, meant the six hard courts and two synthetic courts could be brought up to standard.

Rockingham Tennis Club secretary Gail Mountain said research into the last time the courts had been resurfaced had proved fruitless.

“It would have been at least 25 years,” she said.

“They were in desperate need of refurbishment, though. They had big cracks in them.”

“We had a big busy bee, where everyone got involved to help. It was fun.”

Mrs Mountain said the club was grateful for the extra money to fund the project.

“It’s been a long 12 months, but now we’re reaping the rewards,” she said.

“We’re hoping to encourage lots more visitors and members to the club.

“We’ve done lots of work around the clubrooms as well, so it’s looking great.”

The open day will run from 1pm with social tennis.

Members will celebrate with an afternoon tea with Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels, City of Rockingham officers and the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Terry Waldron.

Mrs Mountain said it would be a great way for prospective new members to come and have a look at the courts and enjoy the club.
