Cricket: Peschel on the world staget

TOM WINTERBOURNSound Telegraph

After just three years in the sport, Port Kennedy teenager Taneale Peschel has been called up to represent Australia in the World Women’s Indoor Cricket Championships in South Africa in early October.

The Rockingham Senior High School student, who will be 17 in August, is also eyeing a place in the Australian Southern Stars team in the outdoor form of the game.

Australia are the reigning champions of the biennial indoor world cup, beating New Zealand in the final in 2009 in Brisbane.

Other competing nations were South Africa and England.

This cricket-mad teenager was introduced to the game by her mother Tanya, who drives her to Ballajura three days a week for practice.

She plays for top-of-the-table Melville in the WA Women’s Super League and also plays for Melville in the U19 Boys Super League.

This season she will play outdoor cricket for Midland- Guildford in the A-Grade women’s competition, after two years with South Perth and one year with Rockingham, also in A-Grade.

Peschel represented WA at the Australian Women’s Championships in Canberra in 2008 and Brisbane in 2009, but missed out on selection last year.

She hopes to regain her place in the State team this coming season.
