Dancers shine for NAIDOC

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

It was a celebration of culture at Babbingur Mia Aboriginal Health Care Centre on Friday, as communities gathered to mark national NAIDOC Week.

Dozens travelled from across the Perth metropolitan area to take part in the full-day program of events, including traditional mia-mia and fire making, a barbecue lunch and a much anticipated performance from young dance group Little Doorum.

Dance group co-ordinator Olman Walley said the youngsters, who ranged in age from three to nine, had been learning traditional dances for most of their lives, and had looked forward to performing for friends, relatives and gathered guests.

Mr Walley said the group delighted attendees with the spirit — or cleansing — dance, followed by the kangaroo, emu and willy wagtail dances.

Thornlie-based visitor Sharah Humphries said she was proud to see her brothers, nephews and sons continue with family tradition.
