Darius Wells Library all booked up

BRIAN OLIVERSound Telegraph

When the Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre was opened by the Premier in January, Kwinana’s brand new state-of-the-art library had just one book.

Today, the finishing touches are being completed to stock the shelves with books which have been transferred from the City’s old library on Hutchins Cove.

In five days time, when the new centre is scheduled to open, the public will have access to all the library’s bells and whistles.

Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said library staff had been working diligently to move all of the books, equipment and infrastructure from its current location, after the old library closed on May 25.

“It’s certainly taken a bit longer than we’d hoped, but with the opening now on our doorstep it’s time for the Kwinana community to get excited,” she said.

“This is yet another example of just how far Kwinana has come over the past few years and is testament to the success of the $340 million city centre revitalisation project.”

The $22 million facility, funded by the State and Federal governments, is also home to a Dome Cafe, creche, function hall and community lounge.

Positioned at the northern end of the Darius Wells building and around 1700sqm of floor space, the library will also have an array of modern services and amenities, including self check-out areas, smart book return stations and an activity corner with gaming consoles.

Librarian Brett Hatwell said everyone involved with the library was eager to settle into the new centre.

“The team’s really excited to get up and running in the new building and provide our patrons with one of the best library services in Perth,” he said. “We’re going to have areas which cater specifically to children and youth, adults and students, and there’s even a dedicated area for local history buffs.”

Kwinana MLA Roger Cook said a modern library was important for a connected community.

“It will make a huge contribution to the lives of people living in the community,” he said.
