Debbie’s dreams come true
When Rockingham singer Debbie Beynon steps out onto the stage she leaves her personality behind and transforms into a Stevie Nicks double.
With flowing blonde hair, and the costumes to match, Beynon said it was both a love of Nicks and a passion for performing which lead her down the path of interpreting the Fleetwood Mac star.
“I first started doing (performing) Stevie Nicks when I was about 28 because a friend of mine told me I looked just like her,” she said.
“I just found that the response to her music was good because her music is from the heart.
“Everything she writes about is something I can relate to, whether it is falling in love or being jilted.”
The 50-year-old singer has embraced the Rockingham community for the past two years, performing Nicks, Robbie Williams, The Doors, ABBA, The Rolling Stones tributes at hotels and birthday parties.
Beynon, who works at nursing homes and retirement villages, said she also performed theme shows for the elderly.
She said, no matter what character she was performing, the key to being believable was to be able to portray the character accurately.
“Behind the music, and the dance and the creativity, I am actually an actress,” she said.
“When I get out of the costume and I get home and I put on the trackies and kick back, I’m me.”
A singer from the age of three, Beynon said her love for music developed as a teenager when she first discovered ABBA.
“I was about 15 and I picked up a guitar and started strumming away, and I got their books and learnt their songs,” she said.
