A motley crew made up of defence force members from HMAS Stirling raised more than $15,000 for cancer research over the course of a nine-day, 3000km motorcycle ride around the South West last month.

The WA team took part in the Long Ride charity motorcycle event from April 7-16, riding from Perth to Geraldton, inland to Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and finishing in Margaret River.

The goal was to spread awareness of men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer, and raise funds along the way.

The group stopped in regional towns and met with community groups and Men’s Shed members across the region.

Long Ride co-ordinator Neville Everett said the community involvement was a fantastic experience.

“The generosity of rural Australia never ceases to amaze me and the support, stories and interaction was second to none,” he said.

“I very much appreciate the effort that riders go to, to engage the community on the awareness front, but also raise funds that will hopefully find a solution to this cancer in the very near future.”

HMAS Stirling commanding officer captain Brian Delamont said the ride was worthwhile.

“There are some cultural barriers and men don’t always discuss these things or seek help like they should,” he said.

“It was astonishing how many people in these little communities had suffered from it.”

The money raised has been handed over to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, which will then fund cancer research conducted by post-graduate students.
