Demons too strong

ANTHONY GUERRIEROSound Telegraph

A fighting effort by the Rockingham Rams was not enough to stop the Waroona Demons running out 44-point winners at Anniversary Park on Saturday afternoon.

Despite being in the game at three-quarter time, the Rams couldn’t contain the Demons in the final stanza of their round seven game in the Alcoa Peel Football League eventually going down, 18.10 (118) to 11.8 (74).

After a great opening 10 minutes in which the Rams matched the Demons in physical pressure and the scoreboard, they took the foot off the pedal to allow the visitors to take a 19-point quarter time lead.

Rams upped the ante in the second term to out-score the Demons four goals to two, thanks to three off the boot of forward Nick Gooderson, who had four to half-time.

After half-time, the Rams again matched the Demons in terms of goals and only trailed last year’s grand finalists by eight points at the last change, with a sniff of an upset victory. But eight points would be as close as they would get as the Demons kicked away with an eight-goal term, including three long goals from forward Alan Wilson.

It was a good effort by the home side, who were disappointed with their loss last week to the Mustangs and would have been buoyed by the performance of the strongmarking Gooderson, who provided the much-needed target in attack.

Gooderson was among the team’s best with six goals, while Michael Coy chimed in with four to keep the team in the game.

Other notable performances included Steven Kenny across halfback, Chris Reeves who ran all day and Rocky Collins.

Next Sunday the Rams travel to Mundijong to take on the Mundijong Centrals, who are on a two-game winning streak.

The game is on at 2:30pm.
