Disaster zone

BRIAN OLIVERSound Telegraph

Kitson Street residents have described the aftermath of Sunday’s storm as a ‘‘disaster zone’’.

About 1pm on Sunday afternoon the quiet Rockingham street felt the brute force of the storm, with strong winds bringing down trees, power poles and powerlines.

Two power poles on Kitson Street were brought down by the storm, causing power outages to homes and traffic lights.

Despite the dramatic event, there were no reports of injuries to people or damage to property.

Tammy Hammill, who lives on Kitson Street with her father Bruce Hines, said she was sitting in her bedroom when the storm hit.

‘‘I saw a flash in the corner of my eye and I just thought it was lightning,’’ she said.

‘‘I looked out the window and saw trees falling.

‘‘It was incredible.’’

Kitson Street was closed to traffic on Monday as the debris from Sunday’s storm remained scattered along the street.

Mr Hines said he was worried they could be without power for up to a week and would lose the contents of their fridge and two freezers.

Ms Hammill said they were using a barbecue to cook meals, candles for light and a battery operated transistor radio for entertainment.

‘‘The only other thing we can do is shower at work or the gym,’’ she said.
