DJ Ovens’ meteoric rise

Kwinana resident Daniel Ovens has had a meteoric rise to success in the past two years.

Together with friend Paul van Nimwegen, the duo form PoseidonDubstep, a DJ double-act creating and performing dubstep.

Although they have been making beats together for only two years, the duo took out the Best New Talent at the Perth Dance Music Awards on December 2.

Ovens said it was a thrill to be honoured at just 18.

“Being recognised in the Perth electronic dance music scene is an amazing achievement,” he said.

“It not only raises our recognition in the scene to get us further in our career but it also awards us for our hard work over the last couple of years, getting through the hardships from starting. It shows that we’ve achieved so much since the beginning.

“It really is an honour and we appreciate the award so much.”

A similar taste in music and a shared passion led them to experimenting with electronic music in their early teens.

Ovens said the move into dubstep allowed the pair to vary the work they produced.

“Personally, I love the fact that there is so much creativity involved and that at the end of the day you’re truly expressing what you feel into a song,” he said.

“I guess there’s just that connection with dubstep just like anyone else would have a connection with a genre they love.

“Dubstep as a genre is so versatile that it can also be really chill, or glitchy, fast tempo or slow – it’s just a genre you can really express yourself with, as an EDM producer.”
