Eclectic art on the foreshore

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

Next month’s Castaways Sculpture Awards will have 46 artists showcasing their work on Rockingham’s foreshore.

Curator Lyn DiCiero said she was always excited about the competition, which is now in its sixth year. She looked forward to seeing visitors’ reactions to the eclectic range of designs on show.

“I look forward to the exhibition every year because it always surprises me what some of the artists come up with,” she said.

“I’m excited about this year’s competition because I know what people are going to see — we are so lucky to have a beach in Rockingham with such a large open space where an exhibition like this can take place.”

Ms DiCiero said one highlight was an interactive piece from WA artist Olivia Samec, who has created a piece from recycled bottles which replicates the skin tone of a whale shark named Stumpy.

“Olivia’s piece features a code on the exhibition label that visitors will be able to scan and watch a time lapse film,” she said.

“Works in the exhibition this year range from literal interpretations to poetic and fun — among them is a mega pixel power tower, a lactose monster and a shoe tree.”

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said more than 15,000 people were expected to visit the exhibition, which provides the artistic community with an important free artistic event.

Sculptures will be on show from May 11-19.
