Eco hub to reopen
A much-loved community environment centre is making strides towards reopening, with volunteers dedicating their time in an effort to restore it to its former glory.
Rockingham Regional Environment Centre, also known as Naragebup, has been closed since March.
However, a new dedicated committee has grand plans for the facility, which has been running locally for 20 years.
Naragebup chairman Matt Wren said they wanted the centre to be used for fairs, open days, event hire and educational courses during the school holiday, but mostly as a focus of the community.
“I’d like it to be the hub of the community where people can meet up, come and do some volunteering and put their input into the centre, but as much as anything, meet and talk to like-minded people,” he said.
“This was the first purpose-built environment centre 20 years ago.
“There are similar centres set up elsewhere but none to the same scale as we have got here.”
Mr Wren also said Naragebup had a role to play in local tourism. “I believe in the past that tourist buses used to come down from Perth and bring people down here as part of a day trip,” he said.
“We have had interest back along these lines and we are hopeful that in November and December we can get the first bus load back down.”
The centre is set to hold a market in the first week of October before a grand reopening on November 26 and 27.
Mr Wren called for new volunteers and local business support.
