ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

The passion and commitment of staff at Secret Harbour Primary School has been recognised, after two teachers were announced as finalists in the WA Education Awards.

The awards celebrate the achievements of remarkable schools and the inspiring people who work in them.

Education support assistant Michele Owen, who is in the running for WA School Support Staff Member of the Year, was over the moon with the nomination.

‘‘I am absolutely overwhelmed and excited,’’ she said. ‘‘I am in a state of shock, I can’t believe it — it is just fantastic.

‘‘I have a great pride in being at this school. It is a fantastic school and I just love assisting and helping to build resiliency in children.’’

Teacher Sarah Couzens said she was ‘‘very honoured’’ and ‘‘excited’’ to be in the running for the primary teacher award.

‘‘Over the 12 years I have been teaching I have worked with such amazing people who have taught me so much and it feels as though I’d be getting this award on behalf of those who have helped me develop and shape my career,’’ she said.

Deputy principal Kim Blacklock said the school was proud to have such passionate staff.

‘‘They are amazing workers — they give 100 per cent and more to the school,’’ she said.

Jennifer Burton and James Hayre, from Comet Bay College, were also nominated in the awards.

Winners will be announced on December 3.
