Environment centre has new leadership

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

Newly elected Naragebup Rockingham Regional Environment Centre chairwoman Alexis Grayson is ready to throw herself into the role with gusto.

The education officer, who has dedicated herself to teaching children about sustainability and the environment for the past two years, said she looked forward to continuing to promote the centre.

Ms Grayson said she wanted to increase and improve educational displays at the Safety Bay Road centre, and actively seek volunteers to help in the gardens.

She said Naragebup’s presence within the community was already quite strong, thanks to a working partnership with Rockingham Shopping Centre and businesses across the region.

“Our involvement with Rockingham City Shopping Centre has been great, because their website now features our events,” Ms Grayson said.

“More than 400 children had close encounters with some of our reptiles at the shops on the first day of the school holidays, which has helped increase the number of visitors here.”

She said she was committed to teaching children and visitors about habitats, the effects of urbanisation, renewable energy and sustainability through Naragebup events, including frog walks and bush tucker activities.

Ms Grayson said a number of behind the scenes ventures were also thriving at Naragebup, including involvement with offshore wildlife rescue and research.

She took over from outgoing chairperson Pauline Whitehead at the centre’s annual general meeting last week.

If you can volunteer some time to help in the gardens at Naragebup Rockingham Regional Environment Centre, contact Ms Grayson on 9591 3077.
